Real-time emissions monitoring for accurate carbon
footprint calculation

Ruukki Construction has introduced a new emission calculation feature in the
Celesta Plan TMS transport management solution used in Finland and the Baltic
countries. The feature enables the monitoring of unit-specific transport emissions
and accurate carbon footprint calculation, which supports Ruukki's sustainability
goal of reducing the carbon footprint of its own operations by 70% by 2030. The
renewal responds to customers' growing environmental awareness and enables
them to choose more ecological transport options.

Ruukki has been using the Celesta Plan TMS transport management solution,
implemented by Identoi Oy, in Finland since 2014. This system allows for real-time
monitoring of delivery times and routes, as well as scheduling unloading times. Drivers
report deliveries via the application and take digital photos of loading and unloading
activities.

Now, the solution includes an ISO 14083 aligned site-specific emissions calculation feature
as part of transport monitoring. This feature calculates each unloading site's relative share
of the total weight and total driving distance and allocates the emissions from the driven
distance to each unloading site. The calculation uses equipment-type-specific fuel
consumption data maintained in the system. The driver reports the fuel used and the type
of equipment, both of which significantly affect emissions.

Precise calculations even for individual orders

“The introduction of the emissions calculation feature in the Celesta application enables
the calculation of the transport carbon footprint at the level of individual orders. The
demand for this calculation originated from the customers, as more and more clients are
environmentally conscious. Thus, in addition to knowing the product’s carbon footprint,
understanding the transport emissions has become essential. Ruukki Construction Oy
aims to reduce the carbon footprint of its operations by 70% by 2030 compared to 2019,
so emissions monitoring also strongly supports this goal,” says Supply Chain Manager
Janne Latvala from Ruukki Construction Oy.

“As customers are offered low-carbon or even fossil-free roofs, green transport inevitably
becomes a necessary part of the package. To offer green transport, a system that
realistically calculates the carbon footprint is required to make reduction efforts possible.
Customers already have the option to choose lower-emission transport. Thanks to the new
functionality of Celesta Plan, they will also be able to receive precise information on how
much choosing a greener transport option reduces emissions, thus allowing them to select
a more ecological alternative if desired,” Latvala adds.

Application also in use in the Baltic countries

Ruukki introduced the Celesta Plan TMS application in the Baltic countries in 2023, where
the emissions calculation feature is also considered a highly important addition for
accurately calculating the company’s carbon footprint.

“Calculating the carbon footprint requires data from several different actors, so it is very
common for companies to approach emissions calculations generically, using, for
example, European average fuel consumption figures and theoretical route choices. The
emissions figures resulting from such calculations are not particularly realistic in practice
as by choice of methodology they can differ even over 100%. This challenge was
addressed to achieve accurate, order-specific emissions figures for each order, regardless
of how many orders are in the same transport. Celesta Plan solves this problem,” explains
Erkki Jaanhold, Delivery Process Owner at Ruukki Construction.

“Many companies see climate change related topics only through the lens of mandatory
regulations and reporting rather than an opportunity to improve own operations. We want
Ruukki to be a pioneer in these matters. Therefore, it is important to us that, with a
functional application solution, we can obtain valid data that allows us to improve
operations and reduce the carbon footprint overall,” Jaanhold concludes.
